Lyndhurst and Dandenong South: industrial work injuries

The industrial precincts around Lyndhurst and Dandenong South are among the largest employment areas in the south-east. Manufacturing and industrial work produces musculoskeletal injuries at higher rates than most sectors, and the causes are consistent enough to be predictable.

Repetitive production work

Assembly and production lines involve the same movement performed thousands of times per shift, usually at a fixed station height that suits an average height nobody actually is. Tall workers stoop; short workers reach. Both accumulate load asymmetrically.

Manual handling

Lifting, carrying and loading, often in confined spaces and to time pressure. As with all occupational back pain, the injury is usually cumulative rather than a single event — the memorable lift is the moment it surfaced. See low back pain.

Vibration from tools

Hand-held power tools transmit vibration into the hand and forearm. Sustained exposure irritates the forearm tendons and can affect the nerves at the wrist. Numbness or tingling in the hand, particularly at night, warrants assessment — our elbow and wrist pain page explains why the cause is often further up the arm.

Overhead work

Anything performed above shoulder height loads the rotator cuff and holds the neck in extension. This is the opposite postural pattern to desk work, and it needs the opposite corrective approach.

WorkCover and practical plans

We see WorkCover patients regularly and can work within a claim — call before your first appointment so the details are in order. Treatment is built around your shift pattern, including which tasks to modify rather than a blanket instruction to rest.

How we approach it

The first appointment covers a full history and a movement and orthopaedic assessment, not just the sore area. With occupational and lifestyle-driven pain in particular, the useful part is usually working out which daily loads are maintaining the problem — because treating the tissue weekly while the cause continues unchanged rarely holds. You leave knowing what we found, what is driving it, and roughly how long it should take.
