Trades, machinery and back pain in Pakenham

A large share of our Pakenham patients work in trades, logistics or agriculture. These are physically demanding roles with early starts, and they share a problem that shapes everything about treatment: there is usually no realistic option to stop working for a fortnight.

Whole-body vibration

Extended hours in trucks, tractors, excavators and other plant expose the lumbar spine to sustained low-frequency vibration in a seated, flexed position. It is a well-recognised risk factor for disc degeneration and nerve irritation, and it rarely produces a sudden injury — it steadily lowers the threshold until an ordinary lift sets things off.

Overhead work

Electricians, plasterers and mechanics hold the cervical spine in extension for long stretches, compressing the joints at the back of the neck. This is why generic posture advice often backfires for tradies: it is written for the forward-head desk pattern, which is the opposite problem.

Cumulative loading, not one lift

The injury is rarely the lift people remember. It is the thousandth lift on a back that never got a chance to recover from the previous nine hundred, usually at the end of a shift when the tissue is already fatigued. Our low back pain page covers how these present.

PPE

Hard hats and hearing protection worn for a full shift apply steady pressure through the skull and jaw and change how the neck carries the head's weight. It is seldom the whole story behind a headache, but it is a real contributor and almost nobody raises it unprompted.

Building a plan around the job

We work around your roster: specific positioning advice for your actual tasks, load management across recovery days, and honest guidance about which movements to modify versus avoid. If you have a WorkCover claim, call before booking so the paperwork is right from the first appointment. We are about 15 minutes down the Princes Freeway.

How we approach it

The first appointment covers a full history and a movement and orthopaedic assessment, not just the sore area. With occupational and lifestyle-driven pain in particular, the useful part is usually working out which daily loads are maintaining the problem — because treating the tissue weekly while the cause continues unchanged rarely holds. You leave knowing what we found, what is driving it, and roughly how long it should take.
