Neck pain in Narre Warren is extremely common — whether from desk work, driving, or accumulated postural strain. At RISE Sports & Spinal, just minutes from Narre Warren in Berwick, we treat the full range of neck presentations: stiffness from joint restriction, headaches driven by the upper cervical spine, nerve pain into the arm, and postural neck pain from screen-heavy workdays. We identify the mechanical driver and address it directly, rather than managing symptoms.

For a full explanation of what causes neck pain, how the different presentations are told apart, and what recovery usually looks like, read our complete guide to neck pain.

Common causes
Overhead reaching and restocking
A signature Fountain Gate pattern. Repeated reaching above shoulder height to stock and retrieve holds the neck in extension while loading the shoulder girdle — a very different mechanism to desk posture, and one that needs the opposite correction. Standard "tuck your chin" advice frequently makes this version worse.
Standing-shift shoulder girdle fatigue
Eight or nine hours upright on hard flooring fatigues the muscles that support the shoulder girdle. As they tire, the neck takes over the work of holding the head, and symptoms usually appear late in a shift or on the drive home rather than first thing.
Cervical joint stiffness
Restricted movement in the small joints of the neck producing pain, limited rotation, and the classic "can't check my blind spot" presentation. Often worse in the morning, particularly after a late shift.
Suboccipital muscle tension
The small muscles at the base of the skull become overloaded from head-forward posture and are a primary driver of cervicogenic headaches — compounded here by rotating shifts and the broken sleep that comes with them.
Disc or nerve irritation
Cervical disc problems can refer pain into the shoulder, arm or hand, sometimes with pins and needles or weakness. This matters more in physical retail and warehouse work, where overhead capacity and grip are part of the job.
Close-up of a dry needling needle being placed into the upper trapezius muscle at the base of the neck
Dry needling for trigger points, where it is appropriate.
How we treat it

Cervical assessment covering range of motion, joint mobility, neurological screening and muscle patterning — starting with whether your neck spends the day in extension from overhead work or in flexion from screens, because the two need opposite corrective work. Treatment combines targeted joint mobilisation or manipulation, soft tissue release through the suboccipital and shoulder girdle muscles, and postural retraining built around your actual shift rather than a desk-ergonomics handout. For standing-shift workers we focus on shoulder girdle capacity, so the neck stops compensating late in the day, and on footwear and unloading positions you can use on the floor. Most acute presentations improve in 3–5 sessions.

Common questions

FAQ: neck pain narre warren

How far is your clinic from Narre Warren?
We're at 5/6-8 Langmore Lane, Berwick — about 5 minutes from Narre Warren town centre via the Princes Highway.
My neck hurts from stocking shelves, not a desk. Is that different?
Yes, meaningfully. Overhead reaching holds the neck in extension and compresses the joints at the back, while desk work does the opposite. Most general posture advice targets the desk pattern and can aggravate an extension-driven neck — so we establish which one you have before giving you a single exercise.
My neck is worst at the end of a shift. Why?
Because the muscles supporting your shoulder girdle fatigue over the course of a long standing shift, and the neck progressively takes over work it was not built for. That is why the pain arrives late rather than at the start — and it is why building shoulder girdle capacity matters more than stretching the sore area.
Do you treat headaches caused by neck pain?
Yes. Cervicogenic headaches are one of our most common presentations and respond very well to osteopathic care targeting the upper cervical spine.
Can you treat whiplash from a car accident?
Yes. Whiplash-associated disorders are well within scope. We also assist with TAC claim paperwork if needed.
Do I need a referral?
No. Book directly online. We also accept DVA, WorkCover, and Medicare EPC referrals.
