Neck pain
Beaconsfield.

Beaconsfield residents — experienced neck pain care is just minutes away in Berwick.

Last reviewed: May 2025

Beaconsfield is about five minutes down the Princes Highway, and its strong club sporting culture shows up clearly in the neck pain we treat. Alongside the usual postural presentations, we see a steady stream of contact-sport necks: football and netball players who took a knock at the weekend, cricketers with one-sided rotation loads, and juniors whose parents want something checked properly rather than waved off. Being this close matters for that kind of work, because we can reassess through a return to play rather than clearing you once and hoping.

For a full explanation of what causes neck pain, how the different presentations are told apart, and what recovery usually looks like, read our complete guide to neck pain.

Common causes
Contact and impact injury
A tackle, a collision, or a heavy fall produces immediate neck pain and often a few days of marked stiffness. Most of these are straightforward soft tissue and joint injuries that recover well — but they warrant proper assessment first, because the same mechanism can occasionally produce something that needs imaging rather than treatment.
Sport-specific rotation loading
Cricket, tennis, and any sport with a dominant side load the neck asymmetrically, thousands of repetitions per season. The result is a stiff, one-sided neck that limits rotation toward one shoulder specifically — very recognisable once you know to look for it.
Postural strain between games
The desk week does more cumulative damage to most club athletes' necks than the games do. Sustained forward head posture through the week leaves the neck poorly prepared for the sudden rotational and impact demands of the weekend.
Suboccipital muscle tension
The base-of-skull muscles become chronically overloaded from forward head posture and are the primary driver of neck-related headaches — common after impact injuries as well, where they tighten protectively and then stay that way.
Disc or nerve irritation
Cervical disc problems can refer pain into the shoulder, arm, or hand, sometimes with pins and needles or weakness. Any neck injury with arm symptoms after a contact incident needs neurological assessment before returning to play, and we do that at the first appointment.

How we treat it

Cervical assessment covering range of motion, joint mobility testing, neurological screening, and muscle patterning — with contact injuries screened first for anything requiring referral rather than treatment. Treatment combines targeted joint mobilisation, suboccipital soft tissue release, shoulder girdle work, and postural retraining. For the sporting presentations we build genuine neck and upper-back capacity rather than only settling symptoms, because a neck that cannot tolerate rotational load will simply be re-injured at the next game. Acute neck pain typically improves in 3–5 sessions, and being five minutes away means we can reassess weekly through a graded return to play.

Common questions

FAQ: neck pain beaconsfield

How far is your clinic from Beaconsfield?
We're at 5/6-8 Langmore Lane, Berwick — approximately 5 minutes via the Princes Highway, with street parking directly outside.
I hurt my neck playing sport. When should I be worried?
Get urgent medical assessment rather than booking with us if you have numbness, pins and needles, or weakness in an arm or hand after a contact injury, severe midline neck pain, or any altered consciousness at the time. Ordinary post-game stiffness and one-sided soreness without those signs is what we treat routinely — but the red flags need ruling out first, and we screen for them at the first appointment.
When can I play again?
It depends on what we find, and we'll give you a specific answer rather than a vague clearance. For most straightforward neck strains it's a graded return across one to three weeks, with the neck needing to tolerate full rotation and load before contact resumes. Being close by means we can reassess weekly rather than guess.
Do you treat juniors from local clubs?
Yes. Adolescent neck pain after sport deserves proper assessment rather than being dismissed, and we adjust technique appropriately for younger patients.
Do you treat headaches caused by neck pain?
Yes. Cervicogenic headaches are one of our most common presentations and respond very well to osteopathic care targeting the upper cervical spine.
Do I need a referral?
No. Book directly online. DVA, WorkCover, and Medicare EPC referrals are also welcome.
