Common causes

Feeding-posture cervicogenic headache

The most common presentation we see from the Clyde estates. Twenty to forty minutes looking down at a fixed angle, repeated many times daily, stiffens the upper cervical joints (C1–C3), which refer pain into the base of the skull, behind the eye, or across the forehead. The headache often arrives an hour or two after a feed rather than during it, which is why the connection is so easily missed.

The small muscles at the base of the skull sit under sustained load in any prolonged head-down posture and are the single most overlooked driver of daily headaches. In new parents they rarely get a break long enough to recover.

One-sided carrying load

Carrying a child on a consistent preferred hip or shoulder loads one side of the neck and shoulder girdle for months. The resulting headache is characteristically one-sided, and it tracks the side you carry on.

Sleep disruption and poor sleep positioning

Broken sleep lowers pain thresholds and reduces tissue recovery, while sleeping in a chair or an awkward position leaves the neck stiff and irritable. This rarely causes headaches by itself but reliably amplifies everything else.

Migraine with cervical component

Upper cervical dysfunction can lower the threshold for migraine episodes. Hormonal shifts post-partum can also change migraine patterns considerably — worth mentioning if yours have altered since having a baby.

How we treat it

Upper cervical assessment covering C1–C3 mobility, suboccipital tension, jaw function, and postural load — alongside the practical picture, which in this group carries most of the leverage. Feeding position and support height, alternating carrying sides, and finding ways to break up sustained head-down time change the daily load far more than anything that happens on the treatment table. Hands-on work combines targeted upper cervical mobilisation, suboccipital soft tissue release, and postural retraining. Cervicogenic and tension headaches typically respond within 4–6 sessions, and because the aggravating factors here are so consistent, the practical changes tend to hold the gains between visits.

How far is your clinic from Clyde?

My headaches started after having a baby. Is that connected?
Almost certainly. Feeding postures, one-sided carrying and broken sleep combine into a very consistent pattern we see constantly from the Clyde estates. It gets written off as exhaustion, but it is usually mechanical and treatable — you do not have to wait it out until the baby is older.
Can I bring my baby to the appointment?
Yes, and many of our Clyde patients do. Mention it when booking so we can allow for it.
Is it safe to be treated while breastfeeding?
Yes. Manual therapy poses no issue for breastfeeding, and we will position you comfortably. If you are taking anything for the headaches, mention it — but nothing about the treatment itself interferes with feeding.
When should a headache be checked medically first?
See a doctor urgently rather than booking with us for a sudden severe headache unlike any you have had before, a headache with fever and neck stiffness, one after a head knock, or any headache with vision changes, confusion or weakness. If you are recently post-partum, a new severe headache warrants same-day medical review — mention it to your GP or midwife rather than waiting.
