Does Private Health Insurance Cover Osteopathy?
One of the first questions new patients ask when booking at our Berwick clinic is whether their private health insurance covers osteopathy. The short answer is that most extras policies do. Here is how it works and how to check what you are entitled to.
Osteopathy sits under extras cover
Private health insurance in Australia comes in two parts: hospital cover and extras cover. Osteopathy belongs to extras, alongside services like dental, optical and remedial massage. Most mid level and comprehensive extras policies include osteopathy, though entry level policies sometimes leave it out. Your rebate depends entirely on your fund and your level of cover, with most policies returning a set benefit per visit and an annual limit on how much you can claim each year.
Claiming on the spot with HICAPS
You do not need to pay full price and chase the paperwork afterwards. With HICAPS, you simply swipe your health fund card at the end of your appointment, the rebate is processed instantly, and you pay only the gap. It takes seconds. Bring your physical or digital health fund card to each visit and the claim happens before you have picked up your keys.
How to check your cover before booking
Rather than guessing, spend two minutes checking. Log into your health fund's app or website and look for osteopathy under your extras inclusions, noting the benefit per visit and your remaining annual limit. If you prefer, call your fund and ask three questions: does my policy cover osteopathy, how much will I get back per consultation, and how much of my annual limit is left. Annual limits reset each January for most funds, so late in the year it is worth checking what is still available to use.
No insurance? You can still see us
Private health insurance is not required to see an osteopath. Plenty of our patients pay privately, and no referral is needed either way. For those with chronic conditions, a Medicare care plan arranged through your GP is a separate option worth asking about. If you are weighing up whether treatment fits your budget, call our Berwick clinic and we will walk you through consultation fees, your likely rebate and what to expect. Insurance details should never be the reason pain goes untreated.
