How much does an osteopath cost in Berwick?

Person reviewing health insurance paperwork and rebates — osteopath cost Berwick

If you're weighing up whether to see an osteopath in Berwick, cost is usually one of the first questions. The good news: osteopathy sits at the affordable end of hands-on healthcare, most private health extras policies cover it, and in some cases Medicare contributes too. Here's how the numbers actually work.

What a consultation costs

Most osteopathy clinics in Melbourne's south-east charge somewhere between $95 and $140 for a standard consultation, with initial appointments priced higher because they run longer and include a full assessment. At RISE Sports & Spinal, your first visit includes a detailed history, movement assessment, hands-on treatment, and a clear plan, so you leave knowing what's going on and how many sessions to expect. Current fees are listed on our booking page.

One thing worth knowing: you don't need a GP referral to see an osteopath. Osteopaths are registered primary healthcare practitioners in Australia, so you can book directly, which saves you a GP visit and the wait that comes with it.

Private health rebates

If you have extras cover that includes osteopathy, part of each consultation comes back to you as a rebate. The amount depends on your fund and your level of cover, but rebates of $20 to $60 per session are typical. We have HICAPS in the clinic, so the claim is processed on the spot with your health fund card and you only pay the gap. No paperwork, no waiting for reimbursement.

If you're not sure whether your policy covers osteopathy, a quick call to your fund with the item numbers (or just asking 'does my extras cover osteopathy?') will sort it out before your first visit.

Medicare and chronic disease management plans

Medicare doesn't cover osteopathy for everyday injuries, but there's an exception worth knowing about. If you have a chronic condition that's been present for six months or longer, such as persistent lower back pain or osteoarthritis, your GP can put you on a Chronic Disease Management plan. That gives you up to five allied health visits per calendar year with a Medicare rebate attached, and osteopathy is one of the eligible services. You'll usually still pay a gap, but it takes a meaningful chunk off the cost.

If you think you might qualify, ask your GP about a CDM plan (you may hear it called an EPC plan, its old name). Bring the paperwork to your appointment and we handle the rest.

What you're actually paying for

The value of a consultation isn't just the half hour on the table. It's an accurate diagnosis, treatment matched to the actual cause rather than the symptom, and a plan that gets you out of pain in as few sessions as possible. Most of the conditions we see, from neck pain to sports injuries, respond well within a handful of visits. If we think you need imaging, a GP, or a specialist instead, we'll tell you at the first appointment rather than booking you in for sessions you don't need.
