What Techniques Do Osteopaths Use?
If you have never seen an osteopath, it is fair to wonder what actually happens on the table. Osteopaths are trained in a wide range of hands-on techniques, and a good treatment is a tailored mix chosen for your body, your condition and your preferences. Here is a plain language guide to what we use at our Berwick clinic and why.
Soft tissue techniques
Much of osteopathic treatment works directly on muscle and fascia. Soft tissue massage, sustained pressure on tight points and techniques where you gently engage a muscle while we stretch it all reduce muscular tension, improve blood flow and ease pain. These techniques feature in the treatment of almost every condition we see, from neck pain and headaches to hamstring strains.
Joint mobilisation and manipulation
Mobilisation involves rhythmically moving a joint through its range to restore movement and reduce stiffness, and it is gentle enough for almost anyone. Manipulation is the quicker technique that sometimes produces the famous click, a harmless release of gas within the joint fluid. It can rapidly improve movement in a restricted spinal joint. Manipulation is always optional. If you would rather avoid it, gentler techniques achieve similar goals and we will simply plan your treatment that way.
Stretching, articulation and gentler approaches
Osteopaths also use passive stretching, rhythmic articulation of the spine and limbs, and very gentle techniques such as functional and balanced ligamentous approaches, where joints are held in positions of ease to let tension resolve. These suit acute, irritable presentations, older patients and anyone who prefers a softer style of treatment. Treating areas connected to your complaint is also standard, since a stiff mid back frequently contributes to neck pain, and hips often matter for lower backs.
Exercise and advice are part of treatment
Hands-on techniques settle symptoms and restore movement, but lasting change comes from what happens between appointments. Expect targeted exercises, practical advice about work setup, sleep and activity, and a plan for progressively returning to what you love doing. This combination of manual treatment plus active rehabilitation has the strongest evidence base.
Treatment is always a conversation
We explain what we are doing and why, check your comfort as we go, and adjust to your preferences. Nothing is compulsory and questions are welcome, so tell us what has and has not worked for you before.
