From runners to retirees — knee pain has a cause and a solution.
Last reviewed: May 2025
Knee pain is one of the most common sports and lifestyle complaints. Whether it's from running, sport, or just daily wear, accurate diagnosis is the first step to fixing it.
Common causes
Patellofemoral pain
Pain around the kneecap — the classic "runner's knee". Usually a hip and quadriceps control issue.
ITB syndrome
Lateral knee pain in runners and cyclists. Not a tightness issue — a loading and hip strength issue.
Patellar tendinopathy
Overload of the patellar tendon from jumping, squatting, or rapid load increases. Responds well to progressive loading.
Meniscus irritation
The menisci are shock absorbers in the knee. Irritation from twisting or compression — not always a surgical problem.
How we treat it
Knee treatment always includes the hip and foot — isolated knee work misses most causes. We use manual therapy, lower limb strengthening, and running/movement retraining to address the root driver.

Common questions
FAQ: knee pain
Is surgery the only option for my meniscus?
Rarely. Most meniscal presentations respond well to conservative rehab. Exercise therapy outperforms surgery for many meniscal tears.
Should I stop running?
Not necessarily. We'll assess your load, modify if needed, and keep you running through recovery where possible.
How long does knee rehab take?
Acute presentations: 4–8 weeks. Tendon issues and chronic problems: 8–16 weeks of progressive loading.
