Back pain is the number one reason people see an osteopath in Berwick — and for good reason. Whether you're dealing with a sharp flare from lifting, chronic aching after hours at a desk, or nerve pain radiating into the leg, the causes are different and so is the fix. At RISE Sports & Spinal in Berwick, we assess the whole picture — spine, joints, muscles, and movement — and give you a clear explanation of what's happening and a plan to actually fix it.

Common causes
Lumbar disc irritation
Disc bulges or herniations can press on nearby nerves and create pain, stiffness, or referred leg symptoms. Often worse with sitting and bending forward.
Facet joint dysfunction
The small joints of the lumbar spine can become inflamed or stiff, causing sharp localised pain and difficulty straightening up, particularly in the morning.
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
The SIJ connects your spine to your pelvis and is a common but underdiagnosed source of low back and buttock pain, especially after pregnancy or heavy loading.
Muscle guarding
After an acute injury, the surrounding muscles go into protective spasm — this is normal, but without treatment it can become a self-perpetuating pain cycle.
How we treat it

We assess posture, movement quality, and joint mobility across the lumbar spine and pelvis. Treatment typically combines joint mobilisation or manipulation, soft tissue work to reduce guarding, and exercise prescription to rebuild tolerance. Most acute back pain cases improve within 4–6 sessions. Chronic pain takes longer but responds well to the right load management and movement rehab.
