Do you need a referral to see an osteopath in Australia?

10 June 2026·4 min read
Person reviewing health insurance paperwork — do you need a referral to see an osteopath

One of the most common questions people ask before booking their first osteopathy appointment is whether they need a referral. The short answer is no — but there are some situations where a referral can affect what you're able to claim. Here's how it works.

You can book directly without a referral

Osteopaths are primary contact practitioners, meaning you can book and see one directly without going through your GP first — similar to how you'd book in with a physiotherapist or dentist. You don't need a referral to make an appointment, and most people who see us have come straight from searching online or through a recommendation, not via a referral.

Private health insurance rebates

If you have private health insurance with extras cover that includes osteopathy, you can typically claim a rebate for your visit without needing any referral at all. The amount you can claim depends on your level of cover and provider — it's worth checking your policy details or calling your insurer to confirm your osteopathy benefit and any annual limits.

Medicare and chronic disease management plans

If you have a chronic health condition that's being managed by your GP, you may be eligible for a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly known as an Enhanced Primary Care plan), which can provide a Medicare rebate for a limited number of allied health visits per calendar year, including osteopathy. This does require a referral from your GP, and your GP needs to determine that you're eligible based on your condition. If you have an ongoing issue — for example, chronic hip osteoarthritis or persistent spinal stiffness — it's worth asking your GP whether you'd qualify.

Workcover and TAC claims

If your injury is work-related or from a transport accident, you'll generally need an approved claim and may need a referral or approval from your case manager before treatment is covered. Let us know when booking if this applies to you, and we can talk you through what's needed.

What to bring to your first appointment

Whether or not you have a referral, it's helpful to bring any relevant scan results (X-rays, MRIs), a list of current medications, and details of your private health fund if you plan to claim a rebate on the day. If you're unsure about any of this, just give us a call before your appointment — we're happy to help you figure out what applies to your situation.
